May 30th marked the start of a friendly competition among departments to see who can pack on the most pounds… of non-perishable food.
The Annual Food Drive Competition, organized by the Alumni Office, challenges faculty and staff to collect food over a 4-week period, to be donated to the on-campus food bank.
On June 27, competing teams will bring their boxes to the Student Centre for a weigh-in, and the team with the most weight per person wins.
The Saint Mary’s Community Food Room opened in 2015. Run by a student-volunteers, it promotes food equity and supplies nutritious groceries on-campus.
There is no shortage of demand. Eryn Burn, Community Food Room Coordinator, says that in April 2019 alone, the bank had more than 200 visits from 142 clients, “quite an average month for us.” The Food Room will be renovated this summer to provide a larger space to better serve clients.
Join in the fun and help a good cause!
