The official opening of the new Student Common Space at Saint Mary’s drew an appreciative crowd of faculty, staff and students on Thursday, Feb 14 — a fitting event to fall on SMUSA’s ‘Student Appreciation Day’.
The renovated space on the 5th floor of the student centre was joint project of SMUSA and Saint Mary’s University.
“Previously the space was used for four offices,” said Ossama Nasrallah, SMUSA President.“SMUSA thought we could use the space in a better way, so we decided to use our capital fund to work on this project.” Saint Mary’s University put forward a third of the funding for the half-million dollar project.
Featuring comfortable couches, tables and seating, study areas, storage space and natural light, the new common area is an inviting place for students to study and connect.
With a small kitchen, 3 TV’s, a projector and 60 student society lockers (one per society), the space is designed to accommodate student society events, but can also be booked for other departments to use.
