David Sobey Centre a key partner in eBay's new Halifax-based retail program

Online retail giant eBay announced a program that will help Nova Scotia entrepreneurs access world markets. Retail Revival will see eBay collaborate with Halifax Partnership, Nova Scotia Business Inc., and the David Sobey Centre for Innovation in Retailing and Services.

Retail Revival harnesses the power of technology and eBay’s global marketplace to support and grow small businesses, strengthen local economies and foster vibrant community growth. Over the course of 12 months, the program will help small independent retailers in Halifax and Nova Scotia grow their business and access new global markets through the digital marketplace.

Halifax represents the first Canadian destination, and only the fourth location for Retail Revival globally. Canada became a destination of choice for eBay after a meeting and conversation between Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Devin Wenig, president and CEO of eBay, in February 2018.

As part of the program, eBay is partnering with Halifax Partnership, Nova Scotia Business Inc., and Saint Mary’s University. The David Sobey Centre for Innovation in Retailing and Services and Dr. Ramesh Venkat are leading the partnership on behalf of the University.

Dr. Ramesh Venkat, Director of the David Sobey Centre, along with Dr. Rahman Khokhar and Dr. Mark Raymond will form a research team to study performance of the companies participating in the program as well as the overall economic impact on this region. The research team will produce a comprehensive report at the end of the program. In addition to the research report, there will be opportunity for summer internships and student projects, providing students with experience in e-commerce and retailing.

Saint Mary’s University is very proud to have this partnership with eBay, as it’s an opportunity to keep local retailers competitive in a global marketplace and put Nova Scotian businesses on the map. This initiative will help to further promote Saint Mary’s place as a national leader in retail innovation and entrepreneurship.
