Recognizing excellence in English language testing

Michelle Compton, IELTS Administrator at Saint Mary's, accepts  a special award from Richard Halstead, Global IELTS Operations Manager at the British Council.

Saint Mary’s University - The Language Centre was recently recognized by the British Council as the 2nd Best-Performing IELTS Test Centre in 2017-18 in Canada at the annual Administrators’ meeting at the Prince of Wales hotel at Niagara-on-the-Lake.

IELTS is the International English Language Testing System and is the world's most popular English language test for higher education and global migration, with over 3 million IELTS tests taken in the last year. The British Council offers IELTS tests and preparation courses throughout the world.

The honour represents a remarkable achievement considering that The Language Centre only ran its first IELTS test in March 2017. Michelle Compton, IELTS Administrator, has been instrumental in building the Centre and our off-site venues in New Brunswick, PEI and Newfoundland. The award recognizes that achievement.

In addition to Michelle's leadership and the commitment of Language Centre teachers and staff, many Saint Mary's staff have also played a role in this success, participating as invigilators, administrative assistants, speaking and writing examiners and/or clerical markers. Thanks to this cooperative effort, The Language Centre at SMU has built a reputation as a high quality English language testing provider.

The award was presented to the centre - CA099 Saint Mary’s University – The Language Centre. www.smu.ca/IELTS
