University Board of Governors welcome new appointees

Saint Mary’s has welcomed three new members to serve on the University’s Board of Governors. Many thanks to former Board members Deeksha Bashka, BA’20; Sarah Ferguson BComm'09, CMA'11, past President, Alumni Association; and Karen Henderson, BComm’75 MBA’77 for their service and dedication.

Scott McElman, BComm’91

Scott McElman joins the Board as incoming President of the Alumni Association for 2018-2019. He has served on the Alumni Association four years ago and enjoys connecting with and strengthening the bond between alumni and alma mater.

Mr. McElman has 20 years of experience in the technology sector, having held roles in sales, marketing and channel development, creating effective marketing programs and optimizing revenue opportunities with a specific focus on software.

Sophia E. Okoroafor

Sophia Okorafor joins the Board of Governors as the SMUSA representative. She is serving her first year of a two-year term as a member of the SMUSA Board of Directors, where she and her colleagues ensure that the Students’ Association is working to improve the quality of life and educational experience for each student at Saint Mary’s.

Sophia is a 2nd year student in the Bachelor of Commerce program. She is currently Vice-President of the Speak Up! Society, which focuses on increasing interaction between domestic and international students, and has volunteered with Enactus and the SMU Women’s Centre.

Rick Flynn, EMBA’97

Rick is the Executive Vice President and Chief Corporate Development Officer at Chorus Aviation. He held the positions of Chief Financial Officer at Chorus prior to his current appointment in 2015, where he leads nitiatives in strategic areas that leverage the Chorus group of companies’ expertise and relationships in identified growth areas.

Rick currently serves as a Board member on the following non-profit organizations; Air Transport Association of Canada, Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame, Saint Mary’s University and CPA Canada’s advisor committee, Canada Performance Reporting Board. He has also served in the past as a director of several small cap publicly-traded companies involved in the mining sector.

He is a CPA (Chartered Accountant), who holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree (Honours) from Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and a Master in Business Administration from Saint Mary’s University.
